Seasonal Food
What’s in Season in the Autumn?
Seasonal food both tastes better and is better for the environment. By eating local food in season you can cut down on food miles and support British farmers. What’s not to like?
Autumn is the peak of the British harvest. Summer crops such as salads, tomatoes, courgettes and runner beans, combine with autumn crops such as squash, leeks, apples and pears. Look out for:
- Beetroot
- Courgettes and summer squash
- Cucumbers
- Fennel
- French beans
- Peppers and chillis
- Runner beans
- Tomatoes
- Spinach
- Sweetcorn
- Plums
- Raspberries
- Apples and pears

Seasonal Recipes
Beetroot is a vegetable that I always used to steer clear of, but I recently gave it another go and became a convert. Caramelised beetroot is both simple to make and very good. Peel the beetroot, and cut into 6-8 wedges. Toss in a little oil and season, and then roast in the oven at 180 degC until tender and starting to caramelise on the outside. Careful not to get the beetroot juice on your clothes whilst peeling – it stains.
Veggie Fajitas This is a regular in our household, served with soured cream, guacamole and a bit of grated cheese
